With the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon soaring in popularity, Playmates Toys began producing action figures in 1988. The line of figures released that year included most of the main characters on the show, and would eventually expand as the years went on. The figures continued being produced all the way through the mid-’90s. Every hero and villain from the cartoon got turned into an action figure, including various forms of the Turtles themselves. Even characters from the movies were part of this extensive toy line.
Considering how mass-produced these figures were, they all had a lot of detail to them. Each figure seemed unique and special in its own way. For a kid back then, there really wasn’t anything cooler than the Ninja Turtles, and the action figures were an absolute must-have. Whether it was a birthday party, a sleepover, or just hanging out at a friend’s house, we would make sure that we always brought our Turtle figures.
The Ninja Turtles love has continued long after the ’90s with a cartoon series in 2003 and 2012, a movie in 2007 and a rebooted movie series in 2014. A new line of action figures that have spawned from each one.
Fortunately, I’ve managed to save most of my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures from when I was a kid, and I’ve tried to collect as many new ones as possible. Here is my collection:
1980s and 1990s
